Crest

One sentence about a business in; a full brand foundation — positioning, palette, voice — out.

Overview

Crest generates brand foundations, not logos. Describe your business in a sentence, pick a few personality chips, and it produces the stratum underneath visual identity: a positioning stance with a named enemy, a voice defined by Always/Never columns, and a palette you can re-tint live across the entire brand sheet.

It exists because founders buy the artifact (a logo) before the argument (a strategy) — and then wonder why the logo says nothing.

02

The Challenge

Strategy consultancies charge more than an early-stage founder's entire budget, so founders skip to logo marketplaces — buying decoration with no positioning underneath. The AI tools that try to fill this gap fail by agreeableness: they generate 'modern, clean, trustworthy' for everyone, which is another way of generating nothing. A brand foundation is only useful if it excludes something. The product had to be affordable like a generator but opinionated like a consultant.

03

Goals

  • 01

Deliver a real brand foundation — positioning, voice, palette, personality — from one sentence of input.

  • 02

Force a stance: every generated brand must name what it's against (the enemy line).

  • 03

Output an artifact worth keeping: a designed brand sheet, not a chat transcript.

  • 04

Let founders adjust without breaking coherence — live palette re-tinting across the whole system.

04

Research

The methodology research distilled what expensive brand strategy actually produces — positioning against an alternative, a voice with boundaries, values that exclude — into a generatable structure. The recurring finding across real strategy documents: the useful ones are defined by their refusals. 'Premium but approachable' appears in no strong brand's foundation; 'never discounts, never apologizes for price' does.

Auditing AI branding tools confirmed the failure mode to design against: models default to consensus. Left unconstrained, every generated brand converges on the same friendly middle. The fix had to be structural — the output format itself demanding conflict — not better prompting alone.

05

Strategy Thesis

Opinionated by construction — a brand foundation is only real if it excludes something.

Crest's generation is forced through a stance-taking structure. The enemy line is mandatory: every brand must articulate the category default it rejects. The voice section is built as Always/Never columns, because 'never' is where brand voice actually lives. The model can't drift to consensus; the format won't accept it.

The output is treated as a deliverable, not a response: a composed brand sheet — positioning, enemy, voice columns, palette, type direction — designed to be exported and kept. And because founders tweak, the palette is re-tintable live: click a swatch and the whole sheet re-renders in the new system, coherence preserved by construction.

06

Design Process

  1. Step 01

Encode the methodology as output structure

The brand-sheet schema itself enforces the strategy method — mandatory enemy line, Always/Never voice columns, values with exclusions — so opinionation is structural, not stylistic.

  2. Step 02

    Choreograph the strategy reveal

Results arrive as a staged reveal — positioning, then enemy, then voice, then palette — paced like a strategist walking a client through the thinking rather than a JSON dump.

  3. Step 03

    Build live re-tinting

Palette swatches are interactive: selecting one re-tints the entire sheet in place, so founders explore alternatives inside the system instead of breaking it.

Key Takeaways

  1. 1

Opinionation can be engineered: make the output format demand conflict and the model stops generating consensus.

  2. 2

Strategy tools should ship artifacts, not conversations — founders keep sheets, not threads.

  3. 3

Constrained adjustability (re-tint inside the system) gives users control without letting them break coherence.
