The Other Side of Us is about the family that forms on either side of an ocean: the one who stayed and absorbed the daily cost of presence, and the one who left and absorbed a different cost the ones who stayed don't always recognize as a cost at all. Neither brother is the villain. Neither is fully right about what he's owed.
The novel resists the easy sibling-reconciliation arc. What it offers instead: a portrait of two people who love each other correctly and are still going to keep hurting each other, because the hurt was never really about each other in the first place.
